WHAT YOU’LL DO
As a Competence Manager, you lead a defined group of engineers and/or technical experts within a specific technical area. Your primary focus is people leadership and competence development, ensuring individuals have the right capabilities and conditions to thrive and contribute effectively across delivery teams.
You will:
Hold formal staff responsibility for a team of engineers or technical experts
Drive career development through coaching, mentoring, feedback, and succession planning
Support recruitment, onboarding, and retention to attract and keep top talent
Foster an inclusive, psychologically safe, and high‑performing team environment
Champion diversity and inclusion initiatives within the tech community
Actively support team wellbeing and workload balance, proactively addressing people‑related risks
You will define and execute a strategy for competence development by:
Leading competence development aligned with current and future business needs
Building and nurturing communities of practice and enabling knowledge sharing
Encouraging continuous learning through training initiatives, certifications, and learning opportunities
Monitoring skill coverage, identifying gaps, and driving targeted development initiatives
Collaborating with other Competence and Team Managers to ensure consistency across teams
You will also:
Partner with Engineering Managers, Tech PMs, Area Managers, and People Business Partners on workforce and competence planning
Contribute to strategic workforce planning, sourcing strategies, and talent pipelines for critical roles
Influence organisational decisions on skills, sourcing models, and capability building
Provide operational people support when needed, including acting as an escalation point for people‑related delivery issues
Contribute to planning and cost efficiency related to staffing, training, and community activities

Solid understanding of engineering ways of working, including agile and continuous improvement
