Om jobbet

Join us at the forefront of AI-based digital health systems for defence medicine and the Swedish Armed Forces, for this postdoctoral position at the Division of Signal processing and Biomedical engineering at the Department of Electrical Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology.
About us
The group Care@Distance - Remote and Prehospital Digital Health - led by Dr Stefan Candefjord and Prof Emeritus Bengt Arne Sjöqvist is part of the Division of Signal processing and Biomedical engineering at the Department of Electrical Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology. Our research is focused on improving prehospital care for civilian and military settings via AI-based and innovative digital solutions, under the motto "to increase decision precision" in every single decision in the care chain considered, to address societal challenges for the benefit of every patient and especially decreasing mortality rates and improving medical outcomes.
About the research project
The goal for project "Digital decision support for mass casualty incidents (MCI) and military triage" funded by Swedish Armed Forces is to develop a robust and easy-to-use system for personnel with no or short medical training, e.g. combat medics. The system should dynamically estimate chance of survival and provide recommendations for which patients should be prioritized in MCI, e.g. for transport and surgery. We will use AI-based methods building on our On Scene Injury Severity Prediction (OSISP) models, and an in-house virtual test development and test environment called https://virtuality.cloud/ to estimate effects on improving logistics and reduce mortality.
Who we are looking for
The following requirements are mandatory:
A doctoral degree in Biomedical Engineering or a related area such as Digital Health or Data Science. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made.
Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
Proficiency in programming and Data Science (e.g. Python, R)
Personal competencies including strong collaboration skills, curiosity, and the ability to work independently in an interdisciplinary environment

The following experience will strengthen your application:
Experience in AI model development for healthcare applications
Experience of civilian and/or military trauma and digital health applications
Experience of Service Design (SD) and Interaction Design (IxD)
Swedish Proficiency: State your proficiency level clearly

What you will do
You will be responsible for developing a system for improving handling of MCI and military triage, consisting of AI model development and software design for use on handheld devices like smartphones. In addition, you will perform user tests to iteratively develop toward effective system functionality in reduced and harsh environments with no or unreliable connectivity. AI model development will be done on computer clusters, primarily using Python.
System design should be guided by good principles of Service Design (SD) and Interaction Design (IxD), it may be performed using various software applications, where vibe coding technology could help speed up development of prototypes to be tested together with personnel from Swedish Armed Forces.
Conduct cutting-edge research in digital health and defence medicine, including publication of 3–5 scientific papers in relevant journals
Supervise master’s and/or PhD students to a certain extent
Possibility to engage in teaching at undergraduate/master’s level

The position is meritorious for future roles in academia, industry, or the public sector.
Contract terms
The position is a temporary full-time employment for two years with the possibility of a one-year extension.
The position requires physical presence throughout the entire employment. A valid residence permit must be presented by the start date, otherwise the offer may be withdrawn.
