Join us for an exciting Doctoral student journey to advance the understanding of battery interfaces and enable high performance structural batteries that store energy while carrying load.
About us
At https://www.chalmers.se/en/departments/me/ we unite the power of technology, people, and society to drive the transition toward a sustainable future. Through research, education, and collaboration, we create solutions that connect materials to mobility, ideas to impact – shaping a resilient and sustainable world. In https://www.chalmers.se/en/departments/ims/research/computational-mechanics-and-materials-engineering/https://www.chalmers.se/en/departments/ims/research/computational-mechanics-and-materials-engineering/https://www.chalmers.se/en/departments/ims/research/computational-mechanics-and-materials-engineering/ we foster an inclusive, friendly, and helpful work environment to which we welcome you to contribute. The division integrates computational mechanics and advanced materials technology. It combines multidisciplinary expertise to predict, understand, and elevate the performance of engineering materials and structures. A broad range of research areas, methods, and applications are included.
About the research project
This project utilises magnetic field-assisted electrophoretic deposition to fabricate positive electrodes for structural batteries. By aligning cathode particles along preferred diffusion pathways, MAG-EPD produces dense, uniform structures with reduced internal resistance, fine control over electrode morphology and allows efficient manufacture of high-performance strucutral battery composites. You will develop a scalable process for positive electrodes and use them to make structural battery composite full cells with unprecedented multifunctional performance. You will also characterise the electrochemical and mechanical properties of the structural positive electrode and full cell. With this data you will design and build a moving demonstrator.
Who we are looking for
The following requirements are mandatory:
To qualify as a Doctoral student, you must have a Master's degree (120 credits) in Electrical Engineering, Applied Mechanics, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry/Chemical Engineering, or a related field
Strong background in multifunctional composite materials, electric power engineering and lightweight structures
Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
Experience in programming (e.g. Python, MATLAB, or similar)
Ability to work independently, take initiative, and collaborate effectively in a research team
The following experience will strengthen your application:
Experience with experimental characterisation of materials
Background in multiphysics modelling
Background in aircraft design
What you will do
Pursue doctoral studies within https://www.chalmers.se/en/research/we-train-new-researchers/graduate-schools/materials-science/
Synthesis and experimental characterisation of structural battery composite materials and their constituents
Develop an efficient manufacture procedure for all-fibre structural batteries
Design and make a moving demostrator powered by the structural battery composites
Develop your own scientific ideas and communicate results through publications and presentations
Contribute to teaching or other departmental duties (up to 20% of working time)
Contract terms
The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from start.
The position is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, which extends the position up to five years.
A starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (valid from May 25, 2025).
Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the entire study period. A valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date; otherwise the admission may be withdrawn.
